Evan Scott Memorial Trophy
History of the Evan Scott Memorial Trophy
Evan John Scott 15/05/1977 - 13/02/1999
In the early 2000's this trophy was awarded to the winner of the Evan Scott Memorial Race. After an association hiatus this trophy was awarded to the first Castle 650 to the first top mark of the State Titles series.
Since 2018 this trophy has been awarded to the first Castle 650 over the line at the Marlay Point Overnight Race. The decision to award this trophy at the Marlay Point was made with input from Ted Philipps (former Castle 650 sailor and state champion). Evan used to crew with Ted and Ted's son David. Read on for the background to this trophy provided by Ted in 2018:
"Evan Scott was the Foredeck Crew on the Castle 650s "Veterans Affair" and "Kindred Spirit" owned by myself over a ten-year period.
We first met Evan when he was a slight 10-year-old at the Altona Hockey Club and several seasons later he came to the Altona Yacht Club looking for a ride.
Because we knew Evan we invited him on to Veterans Affair for a club race and he showed tremendous potential, so invited him to continue to sail with us. Within a couple of seasons Evan had developed into a very skillful foredeck crew.
Some of the most memorable moments were Evan standing on the pulpit on one foot while untangling a spinnaker Halyard hanging on to the forestay with one hand running downwind in a 2-meter swell off Mornington. Another was when he climbed the Mast in 20kts at Waranga Basin to retrieve a Jib halyard.
Heroics aside he was a genuinely nice kid, very quiet, respectful, and easy going, becoming great mates with David Philipps crewing together on the Castles.
While continuing to sail with us Evan studied to achieve his pilot’s license and was continuing to obtain his commercial qualification when a disastrous medical diagnosis indicated cancer of the lymph system. He put up a good fight but passed away at the age of 21.
In the company of his parents his ashes were scattered from the foredeck of Kindred Spirit in Port Philip Bay off Altona Yacht Club.
To the best of our memory Evan was never beaten by another Castle 650 in the Marlay Point while on the foredeck. He also sailed in several class winning races and was part of the team that won the Adam Brinton trophy in 1995.
To award his Memorial Trophy to the first Castle650 home in the Marlay Point Overnight Race would be fitting."
